about us
We’re Ryan and Heather Baker, and together with our children — Carson, Miriam, Titus, and Owen — we serve in Cochabamba, Bolivia through Bolivian Youth Ministries.
Our Story
Ryan, from the age of 5, wanted to be a missionary in Africa. He was thrilled when, at the age of 12, his parents decided to become missionaries. However, he was sad to learn that it was not Africa—it was Bolivia. Spending his formative years in Bolivia as a missionary kid deepened his desire to become a missionary himself. To pursue this calling, he enrolled at Multnomah Bible College. Two years later, he had the opportunity to return to the children’s home his parents had started and serve as its director for one year. After that, he finished his time at Multnomah and looked for another opportunity to serve. Once again, Bolivia and the home called to him, this time as a volunteer. It was there that he met Heather.
Heather grew up as a pastor’s kid and did not want to be a missionary until she was 14 years old. One day, while bored during study hall, she decided to pick a random book off the shelf. It was about a missionary kid who grew up in the jungle. “I want to do that!” she thought. After finishing her degree in Washington, she flew to Bolivia, where she volunteered for a year at Ryan’s parents’ orphanage. It was there that she met Ryan.
Ryan and Heather got to know each other very well that year. A romantic relationship began and continued after the year ended. They were married in 2008. Both still had a passion for missions and explored different avenues to serve overseas. After their first child was born, they planned to travel to Nicaragua to investigate ministry opportunities there. However, before they were able to go, the opportunity arose for them to become directors of the orphanage in Bolivia, and they accepted it. They have been serving in Bolivia since 2012.
And then he told them, ‘Go into all the world and preach the Good News to everyone.’
